In the Metro Atlanta Area (Fulton, Dekalb, Gwinnett, Cobb Counties etc…) — getting a speeding ticket can ruin your day, your week, your month and maybe even your year. Fines are absurd and an accumulation of too many points can have serious consequences.
Not only are the fines outrageous, but guilty pleas can cost you thousands in boosted insurance rates and lost time at work due to sitting in court all day. Points can, ultimately, impact your ability to even use those roads you're forced to pay for. If you accumulate 15 points in a 24-month-period, the Georgia’s Department of Driver Services (DDS) will suspend your license.
Points Suspensions
O.C.G.A. §40-5-57 reads:
The driver‟s license of any person who has accumulated 15 or more points, as measured by the offense date, in any consecutive 24-month period shall be suspended. No points shall be assessed as provided in O.C.G.A. §40-5-57 for any violation committed by a non-resident.
Speeding Points Schedule
O.C.G.A. 40-6-181
- 15-18 mph-2 points
- 19-23 mph-3 points
- 24-33 mph-4 points
- 34+ mph-6 points
Is there some good news? Yeah! The right attorney can get the prosecutor to accept a guilty plea to 0-14mph over the limit. That, usually, results in a reduced fine and always results in ZERO points being assessed to your license.
